5 Outdoorsy & Adventurous Things to Do in Milwaukee, WI in 2020

November 24, 2019

Milwaukee has been named a top 2020 travel destination, which is hardly surprising to us Wisconsinites. Besides being home to some of the best beer breweries in the country and numerous cultural and historic attractions, Milwaukee also has a lot to offer for outdoor enthusiasts.

Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline-raising adventure or a fun outdoor activity to share with your family, Milwaukee has something for everyone. Here are five fun outdoor things to do in Milwaukee, WI in 2020.

Kayak Down the Milwaukee River

Both kayaking newbies and old pros will love paddling down the Milwaukee River and enjoying a unique viewpoint of the city’s skyline and feathered friends. Several kayak companies along the Milwaukee will let you rent a vessel for hours. You can even tie up your kayak outside several river view restaurants and enjoy a bite to eat.

Keep your eye out for the floating islands which provide shelter for spawning fish, frogs, and even muskrats.

Ziplining and an Outdoor Adventure Park

If you crave an activity that will get your heart racing, you can’t beat Wisconsin’s top outdoor adventure park.  Here at Boundless Adventures, we literally put you in the tree. On our ziplines and courses, you’ll whiz past some of our state’s most scenic areas through the treetops.

With aerial adventure courses for all ages and skill levels, you’ll leave the park planning your next visit.

The best part is, ziplining is safe and fun for everyone in your family. With 9 total courses, you’ll find yourself challenging your boundaries as you swing, climb, balance, traverse, and zip-line through our treetop adventure.

Within this 200-acre park, there are more than 4 miles of hiking trails as well as the Pringle Nature Center.

Go For a Hike

Milwaukee offers several scenic parks (Boundless Adventures is part of the Kenosha Park System) and reservations for all levels of hikers, and many are accessible year-round. Try the Parnell Tower Loop Trail in Kettle Moraine State Forest which leads to an observation tower for some gorgeous panoramic views.

The Oak Leaf Trail is another popular destination for walkers and bikers and stretches an incredible 116 miles. Parts of it takes you past Lake Michigan and up some hilly areas for a great open-air workout.

The beauty of Wisconsin can be found almost everywhere you turn.

Bike Through Milwaukee

Milwaukee is one of the best bicycle cities in the country, and there are plenty of cyclist-friendly trails that allow you to pedal safely to several neighborhoods and local attractions. We recommend renting a two-wheeler and taking in the views from Lake Michigan or state forest.

If you’re looking for a twist (for those 21+ of course), consider having a beer on the way! We’ve found some guided beer bicycle tours that will allow you to sample the best beers at the city’s most notable breweries (and burn off the extra calories).

Whether you’re looking for a date-night idea, girls night out or just some fresh air, biking is one of our top picks for enjoying Wisconsin.

Go Cross Country Skiing

We tend to get a lot of snow during our winters, and one way to make the most of it is by strapping on cross country skis. You may just learn to appreciate and even love the season’s beauty by gliding past it.

The Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee organizes local trips and lessons, but there are plenty of state parks that groom trails during the winter and will rent you equipment.

While we don’t offer skiing here at Boundless Adventures, we can’t look past such an incredible experience. In fact, you may even see some of our staff on the slopes.  If you see someone with Boundless Adventures gear, make sure you say hi (we may even have a surprise instore)!
