How can you make the most of a school field trip?

Tuesday, January 21st, 2020

At Boundless Adventures, hosting school field trips is one of the most rewarding things that we do. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do! We thought it would be helpful to share with you some things to consider when planning a trip.

1. What are the 4 main reasons for planning a trip for your students?

  • Integration with specific curriculum
  • Build group identity (when there is a significant change such as the transition to middle school)
  • General curriculum goals (visit the U.N. after studying international relations)
  • Celebrate or culminate group work (end of year celebration)

2. What are the main logistical considerations?

  • Cost/affordability (including busing)
  • Age appropriateness
  • Travel time
  • Conflicts (standardized tests)
  • Proper supervision
  • Safety precautions
  • Accessibility (physical, mental limitations)
  • Fundraising opportunities
  • Paperwork – both for your school as well as for the destination
  • Communication (with parents and administrators)
  • Food plan
  • Here is a great article for all logistical considerations and how you can be on top of your game!

3. What should you do to prepare the students to make the most of the experience?

  • Discuss the purpose of the field trip and how it relates to their school work
  • Show pictures or videos of what they are going to see or do
  • Explore the website of the location
  • Brainstorm with the class in terms of logistics: What should we wear? What should we bring to eat?
  • Consider assigning specific “roles” such as the photographer to the students.
  • Engage the class in a discussion of conduct for the trip. Explain the importance of leaving a good impression on the hosting venue.
  • Recommend that they discuss the trip with their family before the trip.
  • Consider dividing the kids up in groups that are different than their normal friend groups.
  • And of course, answer any questions they might have.

4. What happens afterward?

We found this great article that you should check out!  At the bottom, it has lots of great post-field trip activities as well as suggestions for evaluating the trip using a “Teacher Journal”.

Even the best trips have room for improvement!

8 Ideas for Team Building Activities in Boston (and Metro West)

Tuesday, December 31st, 2019

When a project fails, 97% of the time employees blame the lack of team collaboration.

When team members don’t trust each other the company suffers from motivation and innovation. The solution is to have your coworkers learn about each other outside the office.

A great way to get to know one another while having fun is to attend team-building activities in the Boston area.

Activities should involve solving problems and understanding your team’s strengths and weaknesses.

We’ve compiled 8 incredible outdoor adventures that can truly bring your team together.

In fact, our team may have taken part in a few of these team building activities too!

Team Building Activities in the Boston Area

While the list below is in no particular order, we hold #1 very near and dear to our hearts.  So take a look at the top team building activities in Metro West and Boston!

1. Outdoor Adventure Courses

We know an outdoor adventure course sounds daunting, but we promise it’s the ultimate outdoor experience.

Our Berlin, Massachusetts aerial adventure park combines high ropes courses with zip lining. High in the trees are elements that require adventure-seekers to swing, climb, balance, traverse, and zip-line.

Your team will need to communicate and work together as they traverse through the trees.

Don’t worry about those who have never done this before, we have obstacle courses available for tree climbers of every skill level, whether you’re a beginner or an adrenaline-addicted climbing pro.

Climbers can conquer as many courses as they like during their visit, which means all of your employees can work through the course with each other.

We can’t wait to see you and your team in the trees!

Learn more about our group outings and team building activities here.

2. Canoes or Kayaks

When searching for great group activities in Boston, think about a day on one of the city’s best lakes.

Splitting the team up into pairs with people who usually don’t work together is a perfect ice breaker. Let the pairs choose a kayak or canoe to explore the waters together.

Both employees have to talk to each other and coordinate paddling and navigation. Plus, they will have a personal experience together that can translate to the office.

3. Hiking and Camping

Exploring nature as a group is both therapeutic and a chance to have a distraction-free conversation.

Pick a local trail for a few hours of trekking in the woods. Then find a secluded spot to have a company picnic. The exercise plus the fresh air will have your staff ready for positive discussions.

If you have the budget and time, a weekend camping trip builds comradery. Showoff some of your team’s unique abilities like making a fire, naming the constellations, and singing campfire songs.

4. Touring the City

What better way to have some Boston experiences and elevate team spirit than getting to know the city on a walking or bus tour.

Your staff can visit local museums, landmarks, parks, and end with a drink or a snack during happy hour. They will get to know their coworker’s interests and spark general conversations that transcend workplace banter.

You can also use this tour as an opportunity to network and look for new clientele. Be sure to tell your staff to bring their business cards and keep an eye out for opportunities to talk about the company.

5. Cooking Classes

Taking a cooking class embraces creativity and shows you how well your staff can collaborate using a recipe. Tasks must be divided among each chef and then combined to create a delicious dish.

Once your team is done cooking, you can then enjoy a home-cooked meal and reap the rewards of all their hard work.

You can bring this skill into the office with a weekly or monthly potluck now that everyone has learned how to cook. People can share their favorite dishes and talk about its origins heritage or why they love the dish.

6. Escape Room

Solving problems is the cornerstone of a successful team. If you can’t work together then you can be stuck in one place forever. The same goes for an escape room game.

Test your team’s ability to work quickly and efficiently by solving clues and putting the pieces together. No one can win an escape room alone so it proves to your staff that teamwork is an essential component to any kind of success.

Our team even explored a local Escape Room spot in our Date Night blog. You can learn more about our top pick there!

7. Scavenger Hunt

Create a corporate scavenger hunt about a project or on company history. You can make work fun by distributing tasks that will lead to a completed project.

You can also make your team learn about new software or client with hints that reveal relevant job information.

There are many places to hold a scavenger hunt. Do it in your office, pick a park on a nice day, or take your staff downtown for a more intricate hunt.

8. Game Night

Some corporate team building ideas can be as simple as a game night at one of your coworker’s homes.

Order some pizza and have everyone bring in their favorite board game. Play games like Pictionary to break the ice and let loose. People’s personalities will shine through and you will get to know them on a different level.

Choosing Team Building Activities in Boston

Picking team building activities in Boston can be difficult given the many personality types and preferences in the office. It is best to hold a vote with several options available and let your staff choose which activity they want.

While we know that ziplining and having an outdoor adventure won’t top every corporate event list, we’d still love to have you.

We’ll be waiting for you and your team in the trees!

7 Unusual School Field Trip Ideas in Boston/West Metro MA

Friday, December 13th, 2019

Remember back when you were a kid? You always looked forward to a field trip day. Field trips take you out of the classroom and into the real world. They’re fun and give you a chance to experience something new and different.

Students learn a lot during field trips and make lasting memories and friendships that we’re all grateful for today. Whether they’re at a museum, an aquarium, or even ziplining, field trips provide a unique learning opportunity for students of all ages.

If you’re based in Boston, there are plenty of field trip destinations that your students will love. Here are some fun school field trip ideas in Boston that we love (even as adults).

The Top 7 Field Trip Ideas for Metro West & Boston Students

It’s important to remember that just because you’re based in the Boston/Metro-West area, all of your students may not be knowledgeable on the history or area surrounding your school!

1. The Freedom Trail Walking Tour

Boston is one of the most historic cities in the United States. English Puritans founded the city in 1630 while fleeing persecution. To experience the best of Boston’s history, take your students on the Freedom Trail Walking Tour.

This tour takes you past famous Boston landmarks such as Old South Meeting House, Faneuil Hall, and Park Street Church.

You’ll follow a red brick-paved road with guides who will explain the landmarks and how they integrate with Boston’s history.

In addition to the walking tour, you can visit each individual location. Most of these landmarks host individual tours where you can see and learn more details about each place.

Keep in mind, the tour you take depends on the size of your class. Most Freedom Trail Walking Tours focus on small groups. Take student groups on different days or break your students up into small groups.

2. The New England Aquarium

Every student loves visiting the aquarium. They can witness so many different marine animals and even experience some interesting exhibits.

But what makes the New England Aquarium different? There’s a reason why the aquarium attracts over a million visitors a year. Your students will see exhibits and wildlife that they won’t see at other aquariums.

The New England Aquarium offers exciting attractions such as a shark and stingray touch tank and even a massive four-story Caribbean coral reef. But the penguin exhibit wins over the most students with their slick tuxedos.

In addition to the animals, the aquarium also hosts an IMAX theater that premieres a myriad of different animal and ocean biographies.

3. The Museum of Science

While science museums are popular field trip destinations, there’s no museum as interactive as Boston’s Museum of Science. The museum hosts popular exhibits such as the Theater of Electricity, Triceratops Cliff, and the Hall of Human Life.

The Theater of Electricity is one of the most unique exhibits, hosting the largest Van de Graaff generator which sparks lighting. Students can also meet Cliff, one of the four nearly complete Triceratops on display.

The museum also hosts an exciting biology exhibit — the Hall of Human Life. You emerge inside the human body, participating in over 70 interactive activities to gain a better understanding of our body and how it performs.

4. Franklin Park Zoo

Franklin Park is another historic area in Boston. Established in 1885, Franklin Park hosts a mall, garden, and different natural attractions. One of the most popular attractions is the Franklin Park Zoo.

Students can see animals such as tigers, lions, monkeys, and giraffes.

You’ll also see unique animals and insects not found in many other zoos, such as the Bactrian Camel and the Australian Walking Stick. There are also individual exhibits for younger children, such as the Children’s Zoo and Franklin’s Farm.

To provide students with a greater learning experience, schedule a tour with zookeepers.

The zoo is also open year-round so you can schedule your field trip during the slow season.

5. Old Sturbridge Village

Sturbridge Village is a recreated nineteenth-century village. Your students can see first-hand what life was like in colonial Boston.

Every building has architectural styles that were commonly seen 200 years ago. The village hosts livestock and old shops such as blacksmith businesses.

Students will love the re-enactments and it can help them truly connect with what’s going on around them. Actors dress in nineteenth-century clothing and act out the traditions that embodied the colonial Boston lifestyle.

Students will also love the hands-on learning approach, such as preparing food the old-fashioned way and even designing crafts that were popular back then.

6. Boundless Adventures

If you’re looking for a field trip with some more thrills and excitement, we have the perfect spot for your class.

While many of our other picks focus on some educational learning around history, science and the human body…Boundless Adventures focuses on building up your students.

With a mix of incredible activities such as ziplining, treetop adventures, and even an aerial ropes course, your students can improve their physical health while embarking on new adventures.

Boundless Adventures offers more than just a unique activity.

These activities improve teamwork and teach problem-solving skills. These are also activities your students have likely never done before. They will learn to get out of their comfort zone and try new challenges.

Don’t worry — these activities are safe. Every student has a harness and will take a lesson in safety training. Boundless Adventures even offers perks, such as free chaperone entry (as long as you’re not climbing).

It’s the perfect alternative to a Museum or Zoo visit (although we love those too)!

With a ton of schools already visiting the Boundless Adventures park, we know your students will love it in the trees.

You can learn more about our school field trip offerings and catch a sneak peek of the park here.

7. Paul Revere’s House

As an American Patriot during the Revolutionary War, Paul Revere is a staple in the Boston community.  In fact, his home was turned into a museum for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

Students can visit his home and learn about Revere’s life and his heroic actions that made him famous. Students will also learn about Boston’s history and how Revere and his home integrated with life in colonial Boston.

The house is currently the oldest remaining structure in downtown Boston. Paul Revere’s house also hosts special events such as reenactments and special tours.

Our Top Field Trip Ideas in the Boston & Metro West Area

We felt that with a combination of Boston History and some outdoor adventure, you can find the perfect fit no matter the season.

The best part of your field trip search in the Boston Area is this: Boundless Adventures accepts nearly all grade levels, group sizes, and our class subject is fun 24/7.

Why is student engagement falling?

Thursday, December 12th, 2019

Do you find that your students are not as engaged or motivated as you would like?

You are not alone. Based on one Gallup poll asking 5th and 11th-grade students in 3,000 schools whether they agreed with the following statements:

  1. At this school, I get to do what I do best every day.
  2. My teachers make me feel my schoolwork is important.
  3. I feel safe in this school.
  4. I have fun at school.
  5. I have a best friend at school.
  6. In the last 7 days, someone has told me I have done good work at school.
  7. In the last 7 days, I have learned something interesting at school.
  8. The adults at my school care about me.
  9. I have at least one teacher who makes me excited about the future.

As you can see from the chart below, there is a dramatic drop off between 5th grade and 11th grade. Interestingly, McKinsey has found that mindset/motivation is the leading factor in predicting student achievement.

School Trips to Adventure Parks and Ziplining - NY, MA and WI

The trend towards experiential learning might be the answer!

This article delves into the idea that coming of age during a technological revolution might be leading to “exclusion, exploitation, radicalization, social isolation, and mental health problems”. With adolescence lasting longer due to a variety of factors, society has a “prolonged period in which to intervene to support and empower teens”. We, as educators, should “tap into their need to be with friends and seek or confer prestige by finding channels for collaborative learning and hands-on experiential learning”.
