Please let us be heard in Albany – An open letter to the governor’s office

Thursday, May 21st, 2020

These last 2 months have presented us all with challenges that at time have felt insurmountable. As an outdoor recreational activity, our hope is that we can provide you with some much needed mental and physical enjoyment and relief. We have worked closely with health experts to make changes to our business plan that will provide a safe environment for our guests. Our plan can be found here.

While we applaud the Governor for all of his hard work, unfortunately we, as a small business in a unique category, have fallen through the cracks. The Governor’s opening plan has acknowledged the importance of recreation from the outset. His definition of essential recreation has expanded over the last several weeks and now includes outdoor, low-risk recreational activities so long as social distancing and cleaning/disinfecting measures are in place. At this point, the only outdoor activities specifically not permitted are team sports. Our State Assemblyman Steve Otis, our State Senator Shelley Mayer, and our County Executive George Latimer have all expressed support for our opening. We need your help as well. If we remain closed much longer, it will be hard to come back from this setback.

We are therefore asking you to call 518-474-8390 or send an email of support via the portal.

The message we would like you to send is: I am a customer of Boundless Adventures in Purchase and support their application to reopen. Their operation plan fully satisfies the definition of low-risk outdoor recreation. The Boundless Adventures program provides individuals a great experience. Please approve their application to reopen.

Please help us to be heard.

Sincerely,
Brian and Lorrie Funtleyder

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Friday, March 13th, 2020

In these uncertain times, we want to reach out to you personally to express our hope that you are doing well despite the unease that we are all feeling due to the uncertainty and inconvenience that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused us all. We should all strive to find the inner strength to be resilient for ourselves as well as to support our friends and families.

At Boundless Adventures we have implemented some new policies and procedures to ensure your safety and health are our top priorities. In accordance with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations on keeping a commercial establishment safe from Coronavirus, we are implementing the following:

• All guests will be required to reserve their visit and complete the waiver 24 hours in advance of the visit. There will be no indoor registration.

• Each guest will be asked if they have, or have been in contact with anybody that has experienced COVID symptoms, or traveled out of the country over the last 14 days. If the answer is yes, they will be prohibited from participating, and granted a full refund. Symptoms that will be specifically asked about are as follows: coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell. Staff will continue to monitor guests for these symptoms throughout the entirety of their visit.

• All bathrooms will remain locked to the public until we are advised to open them. Please plan accordingly. All indoor surfaces in the bathroom facility will be disinfected several times/day to ensure the safety of our employees.

• Staff will be prohibited from shaking hands with each other and with guests. They will be required to wash their hands on regular intervals.

In addition to these standard procedures, we will be implementing the following specific procedures for our business:

• Our on-line booking portal will continue to be utilized to manage and stagger customer flow. We will be reducing the number of guests to provide for appropriate social distancing.

• We have stocked up on gloves that we are going to be selling at time of purchase for just $2.50/pair (normal price $5.00), or you are welcome to bring your own gloves.

• While we will still allow 3 people on a platform if those participants are part of the same family, strangers are asked to wait on an element until another participant leaves the platform, to allow for social distancing.

• Equipment and course will be cleaned regularly.

• Hand sanitizer stations will be set up throughout the park.

• Boundless Adventures staff will be wearing face shields when harnessing guests, and will have appropriate PPE at all times.

• Anyone that is not social distancing will be asked to leave the park without refund. This will be strictly enforced.

As a family-owned small business, you can trust that we care about our customers and your safety is our top priority.

Thank you,

Lorrie & Brian Funtleyder

King County (Seattle Washington) has put out the following guidelines:

Outdoor gatherings are less risky than indoors ones since COVID-19 spreads more easily when people are close together in confined spaces. Plus, it’s important for kids to get active outside time every day. Research shows that daily time for kids outdoors also boosts the health and wellbeing of the adults in their lives. Here are some steps you can take to keep children and adults safe:

Continue to apply social distancing practices in these settings, like remaining 6 feet apart.
Aim to limit the group to no more than 50 children.
Limit face-to-face contact.
Repeatedly clean and disinfect any shared sporting equipment, especially objects touched with hands, like balls, bats, and playground equipment.
Any parents or adults that join should practice social distancing and not participate if they are sick.

Fun Things to Do With Kids Near Purchase New York

Friday, February 28th, 2020

No matter what time of year it is, you’re always looking for the next family-friendly adventure.  Let’s face it, finding the perfect trip for you and your kids isn’t an easy task. That’s because every child loves something a little different.  The good news for you is that we know a little something about finding fun things to do with kids in the Purchase NY and Westchester County area. In fact, we have a top-five list.

While our list of the top five fun things to do with your kids can’t possibly cover all of the awesomeness that’s out there, we think it wraps it up quite nicely.

Before you grow concerned that we’re just some random blog giving out advice on fun things to do in the Purchase New York area, there’s something you should know…we’re locals just like you.

Our owners live in your local neighborhood, we operate an incredible (if all of these Facebook reviews are to be believed) adventure park and we want your kids to enjoy their trip just as much as our employees enjoy sharing Boundless Adventures with you.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the top 5 things to do with your kids near Purchase, New York.

Westchester County, New York – Fun Things to Do With Your Kids

We’ll always add the disclaimer that our list is in no specific order…that’s because we love them all.  A few of our team members have even personally been to a few of these Westchester County spots, so we’ve got some inside info.

Legoland Discovery Center

Address: 39 Fitzgerald Street, Yonkers, NY 10710

Website: https://westchester.legolanddiscoverycenter.com/

The Legoland Discovery Center, which can be found right here in Westchester County, is a kids’ dream come true.  All of that time spent playing with small legos at home can now come to life.

With Legoland Discovery Center Westchester, you get a world of color, creativity, and fun for children aged 3 to 10.  On-site you can work your way through various attractions, a 4D cinema, 2 rides and so much more.

They’ve pulled together a comprehensive website where you can buy tickets, plan out your trip in advance and get a feel for the park.

While we know you’ll do some exploring on your own, we personally recommend the Ninjago (a huge indoor playground).

You can learn more about your Westchester County fun at their website above!

Playland Amusement Park

Address: 1 Playland Parkway, Rye, New York 10580

Website: https://playlandpark.org/

Living in the Purchase, NY area we have no doubt that Playland has crossed your mind as a fun way to spend the day with your kids.  We’re here to tell you that just because it’s a common idea, doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. We’d argue that it’s a trip you should absolutely make at least once.

We love making the trip to Playland Amusement Park because it offers Westchester County locals a little bit of everything.  You have major rides, kid-friendly options, bumper cars, and some classic amusement park food options.

This is the kind of trip that doesn’t happen often, but it’s one that you and your kids won’t soon forget.

You can explore their website to see some of the things they offer at the park, review the digital map and you can watch their live stream to see what’s going on that day!

So if you’re looking for rides, cotton candy, and an amusement park experience, we think we’ve found the spot for you.

Muscoot Farm

Address: 51 NY-100, Katonah, New York 10536

Website: https://www.muscootfarm.org/

Have we mentioned that we love the great outdoors and everything in it?

Muscoot Farm is a MUST VISIT spot for any family that loves animals and the great outdoors.  That’s because at Muscoot Farm “you can experience farm animals, agriculture, wildlife, and history in a family-friendly atmosphere. Once a working dairy farm, Muscoot Farm is now a Westchester County park open to the public 362 days of the year.”

They host a variety of events throughout the entire year, including “tappin’ the trees” for maple syrup, farm hikes, and summer camps!

On nearly 777 acres, you can:

  • Visit 50+ animals by walking up to their pens or inside their barns.  Some of the animals you’ll find include cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pigs.
  • See historic buildings such as the milk house, ice house, brooder house, and the carriage house.
  • Attend one of our special events or educational programs.
  • Hike 6+ miles of scenic trails to observe local wildlife.

There are no shortage of things to see at Muscoot Farm and some educational lessons can never hurt either!

Website: https://boundlessadventures.net/ny-park/

At this point in our list of fun things to do with your kids, you’ve learned that we LOVE the outdoors.  Part of that reason is because it’s at the core of everything we do at Boundless Adventures.

Here at Boundless Adventures, we help you experience the outdoors like you never have before.  Being based in the heart of Purchase, New York, and Westchester County, we’re accessible to nearly anyone who’s looking for the ultimate adventure.

If you’re feeling adventurous or have some experience in ziplining or aerial adventure, we’ll show you towards our more experienced courses.

It’s understandable to be hesitant about having your kids on the course in the air, but we promise we’ll keep them safe.  We’ve been doing it for countless school trips, birthday parties, scout trips and more. If you won’t take our word for it, we’ll ask that you explore us on Google, Facebook & Yelp reviews to see for yourself.

We want to show you and your kids how much fun being outdoors can be.

So come learn more about the ultimate Purchase, New York adventure.

If you’re torn between which spot to try first, give each website a visit and look at some reviews on social media.  We love giving an inside look at our park via videos, reviews, live streams and more.

Most importantly, go and enjoy the day with your kids.  If you decide you want to adventure high in the trees, we’ll be waiting with open arms.

Be Boundless – Become Your Social & Emotional Best!

Sunday, February 2nd, 2020

Here at Boundless Adventures, all CASEL Core SEL Competencies are being addressed. Sometimes learning can really be FUN FUN FUN!!!

Self-Awareness

Being self-aware is such an important trait for students, teachers and adults alike. It’s why we ensure it’s at the core of everything we do!

A. Identifying emotions
1. Guests are encouraged to continuously monitor how they are feeling and how it changes. Some climbers may arrive feeling nervous, confident, excited, anxious, etc. Once they begin climbing and throughout the experience their emotions evolve.
2. We provide a trip planner that should be utilized both before and after the trip to reflect on the range of emotions felt before, during and after the outing.

B. Accurate self-perception
1. Climbers must evaluate which level course they would like to try- Beginner, Moderate, Advanced, or Expert. If they do not portray an accurate self-perception, they may find themselves in over their head and wishing they were on a less challenging course or that they underestimated themselves and they should have chosen a more challenging course.

C. Recognizing strengths
1. Climbers will start to realize which types of obstacles they excel at. Some climbers enjoy the zip lines while others like the challenging obstacles. Perhaps obstacles, where balance is highlighted more than physical strength, is easier for some and vice versa.
2. Individuals realize that they have more than just physical strengths. Leadership qualities emerge and problem-solving tactics are taking place.

D. Self-confidence
1. Confidence is gained with every obstacle that is successfully completed. As climbers progress through the courses and meet their goals, they start to trust their abilities and judgment. Their sense of doubt in themselves significantly diminishes.

E. Self-efficacy
1. Guests practice the self- efficacy theory of motivation through experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and positive physiological feedback.

Self-Management

A. Impulse control
1. Boundless Adventures has rules in place for safety purposes and to preserve the environment. When students are excited, they must control their impulse to run to the starting platform, have more than one person on an element at a time, and to leave the predetermined nature trail to create a shortcut to their destination.

B. Stress management
1. Stress management techniques are practiced on the course including positive attitudes, exercise, social support, deep breathing, mindfulness, and nature stress relief.

C. Self-motivation
1. Guests are welcome to ask for assistance off a course at any time, but the majority of the climbers would rather practice self-motivation to push through a challenging moment. Climbers are often overheard talking themselves up or asking staff to watch them but not help because they want to accomplish it themselves.
2. With the Bornack SSB clips employed for safety, we are able to provide a setting that fosters self-reliance.

D. Goal setting
1. Guests are encouraged to set a goal of which courses they would like to complete. With 4 levels of difficulty, there are many opportunities for goal setting. As the experience progresses, they reflect on how their goals are being met and if they should adjust them.

Social Awareness

A. Empathy
1. Boundless Adventures offers a unique experience which allows guests to have the ability to understand and share what the other climbers are feeling. Everyone has the same feelings of excitement, nervousness, exhaustion, and thrill.
2. Our activity provides a uniquely level playing field, breaking down the social norms that typically exist in groups.

B. Respect for others
1. Boundless Adventures is a positive environment for people to grow. While at the park everyone will be mindful of their words and actions to promote respect for their peers, staff, and the environment.
2. We foster a “challenge by choice” philosophy whereby everyone’s role in the day is respected, and there is no tolerance for intimidation or group pressure.

Relationship Skills

A. Communication
1. Climbers communicate with staff and their peers while they are in the trees. They describe challenges they are facing, ask for advice about specific elements, and alert a staff member if they would like to get down from a course.
2. When teachers participate, we find that not only does peer communication improve, but the teacher-student relationship can be strengthened.
3. We can create climbing teams to foster better communication between certain members of the group if this is applicable.
4. **Depending on the group’s requirements, we can offer icebreakers at the beginning of the day. This is particularly useful for groups that either have dysfunctional cliques or involve subgroups coming together.

B. Teamwork
1. Independent climbers are working together to complete the courses. Word of encouragement, advice on how to complete an obstacle, and what to expect ahead are exchanged.
2. Aspects of teamwork practiced on the course include motivation, individual qualities, developing relationships, healthy competition, and problem-solving.
3. **Depending on the group’s requirements, we can offer activities on the ground that fosters teamwork. These activities can be active or can have a problem-solving component to it.

Responsible Decision-Making

A. Identifying problems
1. Each element offers a different obstacle to solve.

B. Analyzing Situations
1. Each course and element offer an opportunity to examine the circumstances, identify perceived risks, and identify any relevant information they may need to complete the task.

C. Solving Problems
1. Climbers employ a variety of problem-solving techniques in the park such as brainstorming, lateral thinking, means-end analysis, reduction, root-cause analysis, and trial and error.

D. Evaluating
1. Guests assess each course prior to climbing it. Ideas about how many zip lines, challenging obstacles, or moving elements are made. Guests then relate that information to how they are feeling emotionally and physically to see if it is a good fit for their next challenge.

E. Reflection
1. At the end of the experience the group is encouraged to gather for a moment to debrief. This is the most important part of team building because it is when the value of the experience is realized. During this process, the group will share ideas, opinions, what worked, what didn’t, what they would have done differently, and how it can be applied in our everyday lives. Each of the CASEL core SEL competencies should be touched on during this time. This is essential for personal and team growth.
2. **We can facilitate a discussion about the day with a debriefing.

** For an additional $10/guest, we can add 1 hour of structured facilitation. The “**” items are typically part of that hour, but we tailor it to the group dynamics and what the group goals are.
